Black and white conversions excel in situations where there is a high level of contrast between dark colors and lighter ones.
Experiment with the channel mixer in photoshop (im using cs2 at the moment). There's no right or wrong way when it comes to converting to B&W. Simply experiment and go with what you think looks the best.
