Purple. Only mean one thing in Brunei. The purple buses. I wonder why the public buses are purple? SO we can see? So we can tell the difference between a bus and a non-purple school bus? I dont quite understand.

We also used to have the purple taxis. Cheap taxis. But thats gone now. Victim of politics. haha. Now we just have the more expensive meter-less yellow-on-white taxis. They;re quite good. Tho some of the drivers think they're Fernando Alonso. haha. But then again, all taxi drivers around the world think they're better than those wimpy F1 drivers anyway. right?

Makam diLuba. Not many of us remember this place, or even know it existed. Long colourful history. A Brunei Sultan was buried here. Violet and i more or less stumbled upon it when we were on a journey of discovery. Haha. Actually, Violet was taking me to her old neighbourhood in Bunut and she suddenly remembered this place existed.

Brunei has so many of these long forgotten places. This place seems forgotten. Neglected. The bridge needs some maintenance work. Lights need to work. etc etc. I think if the authorities were serious, they can make this country really nice and really worth exploring.

I saw these bare trees the other day. It surprised me. It wasnt like this just a short few years ago. Apparently theres been a lot of earthworks in the area in the last few years. The swampy land has turned dry and i guess the trees just died. (Or is that the other way round?). Its really a pity. The trees look so tall and majestic before, high above everything else. I used to dream of being up there, so i can see everything around for miles on end. And I used to imagine also at one time being a sniper up there, shooting at enemies from afar. They wouldnt know what hit them!! hahaha... When i was a kid lah. Hey, everyone dreams of being soldiers right???

Hmm...Violet has gone and disappeared again. I wonder what happened to her? She took lots of pics recently.. Hey violet, where are you..???????

The istana gates. All nice and lighted up. Drove past the area the other night and the whole length of road was lighted up bright, looking so magical and majestic. Hahaha. Yeah u cant see it from the pic above. But we didnt bring our tripod that night and my hands are not as steady as i thought. SO most of the pics we took that night were blurry.

Over 90,000 pepple went to visit the Palace during the Raya open house, including myself. It was good. Quick but good. Pity we cant brng our cameras along. It would have been fantastic to be in there and take pics of all those people.

Selamat Hari Raya to all!!! We had a so-so Raya this year. Lots of food. And lots of old friendships rekindled. Lots of old family ties realised and strengthened.

Food. Yes Raya is about food. All kinds. But my favourite is still around in most homes..the soto. I love Soto. Correction..we love soto. hahaha. Mine with the yellow mee (mee kuning lah!) and Violet with the mee putih. Aaahhhh....

Have anyone been to the waterfront lately. Most of it is wasted!!!! Used as a silly carpark. That place is full of potential. Whats happening with the city planners?? Dont have any bright ideas lately?? Waterfronts are tourist areas..areas with so much potential to be developed as a tourist attraction. Everyones developing their waterfront. Well, everyone except us.

I saw these old ship moorings all bright yellow at the old bandar wharf area. Nice and bright. Next to that is the new monument that looks oh so tacky at night. I had a lot of troubl explaining to a visitor lately why anyone would build something that looks so un-monument-like. Couldnt we have done something other than an arabic-60???

Took this pic of our latest tourist attraction a few weeks back. Saw him hiding in the trees tourist-watching. But once the boat bringing the tourists passed by, out he went sun-lounging. haha. He looks so cool with his big nose. Imagine sitting face to face with that , and trying not to laugh. haha

There is a company in Brunei that offer cruises along the Brunei River on these nice-looking comfortable-looking oh-so-cool-tourist boats. They do a good trade i guess especially among tourists and tour groups. I saw a few of them picking up tourists just to cross the river. They look so good. Proper. And with life jackets! Safe. And a tour guide to boot. I like.

I saw this boat bringing a couple of tourists to look at our dear cousins, the proboscis monkey. (eh Your cousins..not mine). I guess they saw a few because they were just drifting for a while with everyone looking on one side and pointing excitedly upwards at the trees. Violet mentioned hiring oe of these one day and having a quiet cruise down the river. Yeah one day.

Went to the waterfront area with Violet..to the Monument to His Majesty's 60th birthday. A gift from the people. I still dont like it. It doesnt do anything for me..would have been better if it was something more solid..more traditional. As it is, its kinda weird. But i love what they did to the environment of the waterfront area. Its so nice. Wish they could extend it throught the whole waterfront.

Took these pics there. Spent a good hour just pointing our cameras up and down the place. I didnt get much pics of the actual 'monument' thingy tho..nothing much to take there. Looks empty...not solid. Bad for pictures.

The water taxis did good business that day..lots of people travelling up and down the river. Up and down the boats. Good for photogs hoping to get good pictures. Love that.

This cutie was among a group of children hanging out by the cemetary in Batu satu. Violet loves taking pics of children. They were with some adults tho and they dont seem to mind having their picture taken. Thats the thing with Bruneians...If i were to take the pic, they would all scowl or hide their faces or show their annoyance. But if a beautiful young woman (which Violet is) were to take their pic, they would smile and pose and be happy about it. Even the men!!! I dont get it!

I was sitting on the bridge on Friday waiting and waiting for a water taxi to pass by in the foreground but would you believe it, for ten whole minutes, not a single water taxi passed by. Then just after i left, a whole fleet of them went by. Aiya! Would have been nice to have a water taxi in the foreground.

Enlarge the pic and see it closely. See if you can notice whats missing from the picture. I had to take out something just to make the mosque stand out that little bit more.

Heh its been a long time. Both Violet and Me have been busy doing our own thing and going our own ways. Neglected this site. But now we're back and hopefully we can continue what we set out to do when we started this site...pics of our beautiful Brunei.

Our rainforest or in this case jungle-est. Beautiful from up a hill. All green (grey lah in this case) and the trees so proud. I can tell you that from where was, the air is oh so fresh.

V and i stumbled on to this camping group the other weekend. I think they were police cadets. Camping beachside. Which was pretty good. Bring a sense of adventure to some of these youngsters. Tho old folks need that spirit of adventure just as much tho. hahaha.

Singapore has national Service to get their young men all disciplined and ready for war. Malaysia has just started their training camps to get their youngsters toughened up. We have these camping trips???

This was taken yesterday. I thought its funny. I have never seen so many workers working on one wall before. The contractor must be late and the workers have to work overtime and double shift.

I notice that workers nowadays seem to take ages to finish a project. Could it be due to them being employed 'per project' instead of the usual per defined period.

View of Brunei's Government housing schemes. We're lucky to be getting these homes. Many take these for granted. They shouldnt. It affects others still waiting for theirs. Its still an effort to put these up. Its all money.

This was in Tungku/mata-mata (eye-eye) ? The two schemes were side by side. One is uniform in design and the other scheme, are chaotic...all colours and shapes. Still, nice neighbourhood to be in.

We went along the Belait River while we were in KB. Not much to see there. The river is kinda dirty and brownish but it looks safe. No buaya in sight. Saw some men practicing their dragon boat routine..maybe practicing for the Hari Keputeraan boat race in July.

On the way to Batu Marang the other day, Violet got the idea to stop at this little fish farm somewhere along Jalan Kota Batu.

Normally they'd let you do a spot of fishing there, but as the weathers not so good lately, they stopped that for a bit. I dont understand what the lady was saying actually.

The place was a bit messy and it looks like they have a small maintenance budget, but the setting was actually good for a few pics. Especially with the very clear pools and the coconut trees.

We promised to come back to do some fishing next month. We'll see...

These are the pictures from our outing to Kg Batu Marang Friday evening. The place is a photographers heaven. Beautiful. I'm using my standard 18-135mm kit lens and Violets using her Sigma 10-20mm. A few things about the scene ; Its late afternoon about 6pm, it was very low tide, the peope were lovely and helpful, and the clouds, well, what can i say, the clouds were amazingly thick in some parts but almost none in others.

Everybody should do an outing to Kg Batu Marang. Seriously. When we were there, everybody greeted us. And they were soo helpful and friendly. Some took their pics with us. Enjoy the pics...

Does anyone realise how green own town centre is? Beautiful huh. I love the flowers and the plants along the roadside. Kudos to the authorities for maintaining BSB as a green city. I think bloggers should highlight the greenery in BSB in their blogs.

Masjid jame' Asr Assanil Bolkiah. The second most photogrqaphed site in Brunei i guess. And why not? Its a beautiful structure and the Gardens are simply grand. You can take your camera here and plan to spend hours and i can bet you still wont be satisfied. You'd wana come back again.

Pity the view is now starting to be obstructed by the growing trees along the highway..

There were maybe half a dozen playing in the pool. They were as curious about us as we were about them.

A few weeks ago we went to Belait, stopping at Sungai teraban across from the Bridge. Theres a good size community living in the area. And theres a mosque for residents. Its nice and white. The area around it is overgrown tho.

We Bruneians rarely travel much in our own country. We should change that.

btw, can you spot the police women? They're there to ease traffic flow. They do a good job. But then, if the traffic lights are efficient in the first place, we wouldn't be needing those fine police ladies now would we?

How many people remember this Masjid? It started as a 'gift' to His Majesty but ended up as unfinished business. The brains behind the idea had their good intentions but they got over ambitious and ended up coming short on the funds. Not sure if thats settled now. I hope it is. I dont quite like the idea of a masjid that is still owing money. Halal ka tu?

Another brain had the idea of presenting a gift to His Majesty for HM's 60th birthday. Its sitting at the 'tambing' area, by Kampong Air. Its a gift by the Brunei Business Community (?) and it should be so, and not claimed by individuals. Anyway, what will happen in 10 years, when HM turns 70? Another 'gift'?

We pass by this row of houses everyday on our way home. It looks amazing and weird. So many roofs. Imagine living in one of these houses. Must be leaks everywhere. hehehe. An architect once told me that building roofs like these are expensive. Too many structures.

I like looking at houses. Especially their roofs. Tells a lot about the owners who built them. I have seen this big house with real elaborately designed roofs, but turned out butt ugly!! Damn. Why on why??!

Theres a lot of construction work right now in Brunei. Especially shophouses being built. Its a good sign. Hopefully soon we get better shops and items to buy in Brunei, not just the cheap made-in-china knock-off stuff that we are increasingly getting nowadays. Oh and restaurants, we need better ones. Where is Burger King??? Where are u???

We went to belalong some time ago. Violet took her camera along. The pics show our Temuai journey to the Forestry Centre in Belalong. It was a fun ride. The water level that day was low so our boatmen had some difficulty guiding the temuais along.

Some pics taken lastnyte at the Taekwondo grading exercise for white belts. I went there to see and was pleasantly surprised to see little ones, some so young, take to TaeKwonDo with so much gusto and enthusiasm. Found out most are from the JKBS Taekwondo scheme at the Menglait complex.

The scheme is run free by JKBS. White belts practice every Friday afternoons. Its open to under 18s. If you'r interested or your kids are interested, just turn up Friday afternoon in your Taekwondo outfit and register (just bring your ic/birth cert). You start right away. Grading sessions are held every 3 months.

These are Violet's pics from our Sunday drive-around. We stopped at a few places that we ourselves are not sure about. These pics were taken somewhere around the place where the Authorities "melihat anak bulan" along the Muara-Tutong Highway (Bukit Shahbandar).

We especially liked the pitcher plants. The watch-tower were unfortunately locked. Would have been nice to keep it open for visitors. You get a great view from there. Pity its only open twice a year just to 'melihat anak bulan'.

Brunei is kinda interesting with all kinds of funny structures all over the place. This one is one of those 'christmas' decorations we have in kiarong and the other is an old disused satellite dish in Berakas.

Saw a flock of pigeons sitting on some power lines. Don't pigeons sleep? Its early dawn and they are already flying about.

Its been raining heavily the past few days. Guess its the rainy season, or maybe another abnormal weather behaviour because of el-nino or whatever. I took this photo while on the HBHighway. Traffic jam because of flooding on the highway.

Basketball

I saw a couple of little fellows at a basketball court the other day. They had a basketball between them. But the court was used by some bigger boys. So they were standing around, waiting for their turn.

They had a lot of enthusiasm. The basket was high, but their love for the game can be seen in their faces.

Sometime ago we went to Miri. Just driving around..and we discovered this place.

Can you believe this is in Miri?! Its a nice recreation park. They have this water park, and just nearby is a big jungle-jim type park, a skateboarding park is just a bit further, and snaking all around is this long suspension bridge.

Why cant we have this in Brunei? At least its nearby, so we can bring our kids there weekends.

Kampong Ayer Ku

These are Violet's Pictures. Took them on a recent visit to Kg Ayer. I like the pics. Make Kg Ayer so beautiful and romantic.

Kg Ayer is a beautiful setting really. Always comes out good in pictures.

She went out in the late afternoons, when the sunlight is low. Not ideal for photography, but on that day, the strong sun rays make for dramatic photos.

Remember the Jong Batu? I like this pic.

Beautiful tungku beach..again

We went to Tungku Beach again. Sun was shining brightly. Unfortunately it was late afternoon when we got there. Stayed on til sundown.

I like the colour of the trees when the sun shines on them. Nice.

Again some scenes. The DST tower is visible from where i was.

We went to a part of the Tungku that is only accessible by 4WD, using the beach as a road. The original road is ruined by the construction work being carried out there. Hopefully something good will come out of that.

You cant help but be impressed by the rock structures put up there, to protect the beach.

And of course fishermen.

Tungku Beach has become a regular haunt for us. Its nice.

On Saturday Violet cooked lunch. Sardines man! I tell you she makes the best Sardines. Well, anu dalam tin plang tu tapi dicampur dengan..? And sambal belacan! MMmmphh. Tiada tandingannya. No joke!! And she took pics! She goes everywhere with her camera now. AND she takes photos of everything.

Fishing at Tungku Beach

Tungku Beach. Its nice there if you want to rest and enjoy the sea breeze. I sometimes go there with some friends for some fishing.

These pics i took a few weeks back. Fishermen , all of them.. The lengths they go to just to have a relaxing time.

I met these three old folks, enjoying their fishing. Mengikis. It was late evening. Caught lots of little fishies.

They kept going into the sea. Kept on fishing til about eight. Must have been tiring. Those nets are heavy, especially if they are full.

Anyway, hopefully, will be going with V early tomorrow morning. Right V?

Some pics from the tambing, while just lazing about. That spot is just great for 'buang stress', with a great view of the water taxis whizzing up and down the river.

Saw this group of tourists going onto several boats to Temburong. Lucky them..

Berakas forest rec area

The Berakas Forest Recreation Park is beautiful. Lots of picnic places there. I went there just to take a quick look. And i will be coming back soon. Its a great picnic spot. And lots of play area for children and families. Its overlooking the beach and ocean so you get a good beach area.

You get a great viewing area. Lots of little huts overlooking the beach..

Great childrens playing area, lots of swings.

And, you get lots of these little creatures. Cute but annoying sometimes. Just dont let your children play on their own...

I say cute, but some of them are quite large.

Jerudong fishermen

A lazy Sunday afternoon a few weeks back, V was away. So i went with my camera to Jerudong to see the fishermen landing. It wasnt a good day for photography, cloudy and it was quite late in the afternoon.

They were all landing then. A good bunch of them. A beautiful sight. Got off a few shots.

Shows the good community spirit among the fishermen.

I'm not sure what they were doing. Somebody told me they were cleaning their nets, or probably collecting fish from their nets.

Tasek

We missed the SMARTER Hill climb events today. We made plans to join the events but for one reason or another, we missed the hill climbs completely. After all those practice climbs..

Anyway, on Friday morning, we were bored so we went to Tasek, this time doing the Tasek-Sheraton Hill run. We brought V's camera along. I did the snapping.

The Tasek hills are very nice. Gentle and challenging at the same time. The first hill's a killer, for first timers anyway. The rest of the way to Sheraton is quite okay, short gentle hills. V tried it for the first time Friday, and she did well.

For anyone who hasnt been there but fancy doing some exercises, i very much encourage you to do so. The Tasek-Sheraton run, and back again should take you just an hour. First timers normally just climb the first hill and back down again. That should take about 20 minutes. But i guarantee you'll sweat. And feel sooooo good later.

I took the pics. Shows you how beautiful the hills are. We reached the Sheraton hills after about 35 minutes and took the 'easy' way back, along the main road.

When you see this, you know you've reached the 'other end'. Big sigh from V.
